Maternity Direct Turns 2

Happy Birthday Maternity Direct! Innovative Telehealth App Turns 2

Maternity Direct, the innovative telehealth app connecting pregnant women with NHS midwives for a secure text chat which is then stored in the hospital’s electronic medical records, celebrated its second birthday in August 2021.

In the two years since its launch, Maternity Direct has enabled 11,000 women at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to conduct more than 28,000 secure one-to-one chats with NHS midwives and provided almost 20,000 guests access to relevant news and guidance on its midwife-curated Health Information newsfeed.

In addition to text chats, all Maternity Direct’s features are designed to help women and midwives communicate effectively to contribute to healthy pregnancy. These include a Midwife Group Chat for complex cases and handover, an interactive Personal Care Plan for women to plan their pregnancy journeys with midwives’ input, and a Data Analytics Dashboard to help midwives and supervisors spot trends and better allocate resources.

Moreover, during the pandemic, the COVID-19 Triage Form was used nearly 6,000 times to help women and midwives quickly assess whether a woman should attend her antenatal appointment.

For midwives, Maternity Direct helps organise and scale precious staff resources, with a dedicated team focused on handling the chats. Maternity Direct was recently awarded “Highly Commended” for Workforce Innovation in the HSJ Partnership Awards 2021.

Maternity Direct: A Midwife in Your Pocket wins "Highly Commended" Workforce Innovation Award at HSJ Partnership Awards 2021

Acadiant Limited and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to announce that Maternity Direct has been Highly Commended for Workforce Innovation at this year’s HSJ Partnership Awards, recognising their hard work and dedication to healthcare in what has been an unprecedented last 15 months.

Following a comprehensive judging process, Acadiant and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust were handed the prestigious accolade ahead of a highly competitive shortlist.

Held on Tuesday 29th June 2021, the long-awaited evening was the first in-person event for a few lucky attendees from both the NHS and private sector as well as figures from non-clinical backgrounds. The HSJ Partnership Awards took place at the Evolution London where the evening celebrated the very best achievements and innovations in the healthcare sector today across a total of 17 categories.

The Maternity Direct telehealth initiative, first of its kind in the UK, connects a pregnant woman with an NHS midwife for a secure text chat on non-urgent queries, and then stores their chat in the hospital’s electronic patient record. Maternity Direct has been running since well before the pandemic, however, during COVID-19, it proved an extremely valuable dedicated channel for women’s health. With many women and midwives in lockdown or shielding, a dedicated rota of midwives cover the chat sessions, helping scale NHS resources by differentiating between non-urgent queries and essential antenatal appointments. Women’s satisfaction with Maternity Direct is high, with a qualitative survey indicating that thanks to Maternity Direct 80% of users did not have to access another NHS service.

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, who hosted the Awards ceremony, comments, “Congratulations to Acadiant and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust on Maternity Direct’s being recognised for Workforce Innovation at this year’s HSJ Partnership Awards. Following on from what has been an undoubtedly challenging time for the healthcare industry, it was incredible to be involved in celebrating projects of such high calibre.

“This year’s entrants were of such an impressive standard, posing a very difficult challenge to our experienced judging panel, who were not only impressed by the wide range of applicants who demonstrated real evidence of innovation and collaboration, but also great improvements to patient care.

Acadiant and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to announce that Maternity Direct: A Midwife in Your Pocket has been shortlisted for the Workforce Innovation Award at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2021, recognising outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS.

The judging panel comprised a diverse range of highly regarded figures across the NHS and wider healthcare sector. To be shortlisted as a finalist for these awards, despite tough competition from a pool of brilliant applications, is a mark of real achievement for Acadiant and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

Maternity Direct is the first secure telehealth chat app in the UK that connects a pregnant woman with a registered NHS midwife for non-urgent queries and stores their text chat in the Trust’s medical record system.

To address urgent needs during the pandemic, Acadiant developed COVID-19 Triage forms with real-time dashboards for Midwives to screen women before antenatal appointments. To date, Maternity Direct has 7,000 registered women and 13,000 guests with nearly 80% of survey respondents saying it saved them using another NHS service.

Dr Celia Skinner, Medical Advisor to Acadiant, and former Chief Medical Officer at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Workforce Innovation Award, recognising the collaborative efforts and dedication of our teams to successfully implement Maternity Direct. Maternity Direct is an important innovation in secure, remote care and surveillance, to provide reassurance to both the women and clinicians. This nomination has been a tremendous boost to both Acadiant and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and I am sure it will bolster our continued efforts to improve.”

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan added: “We would like to congratulate Acadiant and Mid and South Essex on being nominated in the category of Workforce Innovation for the HSJ Partnership Awards 2021. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the ceremony in June, to join us in recognising the very best collaborations and innovations in the healthcare sector. Winners are set to be announced at the awards ceremony in June.

Maternity Direct App to be Rolled out to Women due to Give Birth in Southend and Basildon

By Poppie Webster, Reporter

A groundbreaking maternity app which allows pregnant woman to instantly message and get advice from midwives, is being rolled out at Southend Hospital.

The app, called Maternity Direct, will provide mums-to-be who are booked to give birth at Basildon, Southend and Mid Essex hospitals with seven-day-a-week access to registered midwifery staff, who they can chat with and receive up-to-date information in the very comfort of their homes.

With the app, those expecting will have access to such vital help even through the Covid-19 pandemic, without the need of an appointment or a telephone call.

This useful tool was launched to help reduce the number of non-urgent appointments, saving women time while protecting appointments for those women who require closer monitoring.

Teams from Basildon Hospital partnered with software developer Acadiant Limited to create the app, which is now being rolled out at Southend and Mid Essex hospitals this week.

Chief nursing officer Diane Sarkar said: "This truly is a fantastic innovation which supports women throughout their pregnancy, not only providing a more streamlined service to them but also improving the delivery of care by staff."

"Hospital and Acadiant staff have worked so hard developing this app, so it is fantastic to see such positive feedback."

Since August more than 5,000 women have used Maternity Direct to ask questions or seek reassurance from midwives at Basildon Hospital, with nearly 80 per cent of women chatting saying they would have used another NHS service if the app wasn’t available.

One mum, who used the app during her pregnancy. said: "I was approached to test the app at an antenatal clinic. I always used Facebook for non-urgent queries and, as midwives are very busy, I didn’t always get an instant reply. This app is much better, really easy to access and the chat feature is a great way to connect quickly with my midwife. I recommend this app to all mums-to-be."

New Maternity Direct App Launched to Support Women During Their Pregnancy

Basildon, Essex (8 August 2019) — A new app, Maternity Direct, will mean mums-to-be across Mid and South Essex will have greater peace of mind in between their scheduled midwife appointments.

Basildon Hospital has launched Maternity Direct, a free, secure, web-based app that connects mums-to-be with an NHS midwife. This is the first app to interactively connect registered NHS midwives with pregnant women for secure instant messaging chats.

The app was developed after the Trust found that women had many questions regarding their pregnancy between scheduled midwife appointments. Feedback from women found that searching online did not instill confidence, and some felt uncomfortable contacting their midwife or the maternity unit with non-urgent questions.

Set up for non-urgent enquiries, the app provides access to up-to-date, evidence-based information and advice. Mums-to-be who have registered with Basildon Hospital for their maternity care can access the chat function of the app, and a record of their chat will be available on the woman’s phone and stored in the Trust’s secure patient record.

The main aims of the app are to improve communication for women whilst reducing the number of unnecessary phone calls, hospital attendances, and GP appointments for non-urgent issues. Midwives can support more than one “chat message” at a time, compared with the time taken on standard telephone calls. A “midwife group chat” will also provide assurance and support.

An in-app appointment calendar offers reminders of upcoming maternity related hospital appointments to help reduce the number of missed appointments.

Clare Panniker, Chief Executive Officer at Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group said:

“I’m very proud of the work the maternity team have done in creating the maternity direct app. To be able to chat online with a midwife and be guaranteed a response in a few hours for those issues that are not an emergency is so reassuring and will give peace of mind to women going through the normal but unexpected developments pregnancy brings. I’m confident that this app will soon be the first port of call for women all over Mid and South Essex.”

At present, the “chat” and “my appointments” functions of the app are only available to women who have referred their pregnancy to Basildon Hospital although anyone can access the app as a guest for health information. Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals are part of the Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group, and Maternity Direct will be introduced to the Southend and Mid Essex sites within the next year.

Karen Berry, Maternity Commissioner of the Acute Commissioning Team for Mid and South Essex, said: “The Maternity App has been tested by our maternity patient partners and will grow and develop, supporting the great work being undertaken in our local maternity community. The app will also offer women information about their choice of maternity services, along with accessibility to personalised care plans and will enhance the continuity of care throughout their pregnancy journey. The development of this app forms part of the BETTER BIRTHS initiative, the aim being to improve outcomes to our mothers and babies.”

Lesley Overy, Head of Midwifery, Nursing & Quality at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals said: “This app is a fantastic step forward to helping provide women with greater confidence during their pregnancy. With up-to-date information and a midwife to hand, women can access non-urgent support and advice when they need it. The need to organise non-urgent appointments may also be reduced, saving women time whilst protecting our appointments for those women who require closer monitoring.”

The Trust partnered with software developer Acadiant Limited to create Maternity Direct.

Jackie Kestenbaum, Director of Acadiant Limited, said: “With Maternity Direct, pregnant women will now be able to get the answers they need easily, from a reliable, trustworthy source in the manner they are most comfortable using—on their smartphones. Maternity Direct is a wonderful software solution using telehealth to enhance a woman’s pregnancy journey while better scaling Trust resources. It has been a delight to partner with Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group on this important innovation.”
